INTERACTIVE LEARNING
Traditional approach
The major temptation, when creating CBT, is to take the quick route and create a 'page turner' or 'electronic book'. The full extent of the interaction required by the CBT package is to click the 'next' button. Faced with such an experience, the prospective learner quickly becomes bored. If the learner has a good memory, he may be able to score well in the test by recalling the facts, but if the CBT package is required to teach a skill, or make the learner use judgement, then this approach will not succeed.
A better approach
With the need clearly understood that the learner is to experience the area he is being trained in, a better approach is to let the student experiment as he learns. If the student is being taught how to use a piece of electronic equipment, then a replication of this equipment in the training module as a simulation/emulation will provide a greater understanding of the operating principles than merely showing a few pictures and a textual description. Interactivity is the key to increasing the learning effect!>
